Cascia Hall Kids Build Home For Family In Need

Students from Cascia Hall strapped on hard hats for a Tulsa family in need.

The walls are quickly going up on a new home.

"This morning we had about 30 kids out here," Bruce Saxton said.

"We used a lot of nails guns, saws, putting stuff together," Cascia sophomore Luke Smith said.

This year, students at Cascia Hall have raised over $50,000, which was enough to pay for the lumber costs for a new home for Tamika Lugrand and her family.

"It's a special thing… brings the school together, brings the students together," Saxton said.

And the homeowners are forever grateful.

"It means a lot, and lets me know that people do care, cause you don't see a lot of that these days," Lugrand said.

Currently Lugrand, her husband Mike and their three kids live in a two-bedroom house.

But thanks to an outpouring of support from the community, they'll soon have a new home.

"It's rewarding you know, you're giving back something to somebody and giving them a hand up," Earl Stutzman said.

Saxton said, "The time when you're most joyful is when you're giving to others."

The project is expected to take about 11 weeks to complete.

And Tamika plans to be there every step of the way.

"We have to actually go to the Habitat site, they teach us how to hammer, how to use a staple gun... I've tried dry walling but that isn't for me," she said.

And while construction may take a little getting used to, Tamika said she'll always be thankful for the help.

"[It] let me know that their parents are instilling in them to be... leaders… helping people," Lugrand said.
