Firefighters have contained a large grassfire in Caddo County.
According to Caddo County emergency officials, the fire started about four miles southwest of Anadarko and west of Chickasha near SH 9 Monday afternoon. Southwest winds blew the fire to the north and northwest, eventually crossing SH 9.
The fire burned nearly 600 acres. At least eight structures were being threatened, but firefighters managed to keep those structures safe.
SH 9 between CR 2620 and US 62, west of Anadarko is closed due to the smoke blowing across the road.
The fire burned out in the Washita River and nearby plowed farmlands.
Thirty five agencies including 20 fire departments responded to the wildfire. The blaze stretched nearly four miles and covered a thousand acres, according to Anadarko Fire Chief Greg Stone.
"Tomorrow in the heat of the afternoon I anticipate the more flare ups," he said.
The fire Monday caused at least a dozen evacuations, but Stone says there were no injuries or structures burned.
