Musicians Are Pickin' and Grinnin' At Tulsa State Fair

Posted: Updated:

The Tulsa State Fair is in full swing and musicians from across the country are gathering in Tulsa for the "Picking and Fiddling" Championships.

The showcase of country and bluegrass music started Saturday with the fiddling portion of the competition.

The event brings in some of the top musicians from across the county, including some recent national champions.

Altogether, nearly 40 musicians will competed on Saturday and it kicked off with the youth and pee-wee classes.

Along with a chance at winning cash and some hefty hardware in the form of a belt buckle, participants get to showcase what has become a tradition for the city of Tulsa.

This marks the 40th year for the contest, and contest supervisor Bob Fjeldstead said it's important to pass along this style of country music with the younger generations.

"We try and plant those young trees, so when us old folk are dead and gone, it's carries on," Fjeldstead said.
