We know that Oklahoma State and Kansas will play on Saturday in Lawrence, Kan., but we still don't know who will be lining up under center for the Cowboys.

OSU coach Mike Gundy didn't shed any light on the starting quarterback situation at his Monday press conference in Stillwater.

Starter Wes Lunt went down with a knee injury on the Cowboys' first offensive series in the team's 65-24 victory against Louisiana on Sept. 15. Backup J.W. Walsh entered the game and helped guide the Cowboys' to a school-record 742 yards of total offense.

Then Walsh nearly guided OSU to an upset victory over No. 12 Texas in a game that was ultimately decided by a controversial no-call on a 41-36 defeat.

To say Walsh has been effective in his stint for the injured Lunt might be an understatement. Walsh's 181.2 quarterback rating currently ranks second in the nation to Heisman frontrunner Geno Smith from West Virginia.

Even though Walsh has shined in replacement duty, Gundy said Lunt will not lose his starting gig because of an injury but, "anybody can get beat out at any time." Lunt has returned to throwing drills in practice but Walsh is still taking the reps with the first-team offense.

So how soon will the Cowboy coaching staff decide who will start against the Jayhawks?

"It'll be decided midweek because someone has to take the reps with the ones," offensive coordinator Todd Monken said. "You have to move in the direction that you want to go with your offense. Obviously by Tuesday or Wednesday we'll know. Now whether everyone around the country will know, I don't know, but we will."

Gundy seemed to answer the last part of that in saying that he will not announce who the starter will be until the Cowboys step out onto the field in Lawrence.

This will make preparation difficult for a KU team that ranks 97th nationally in total defense. Whether it's Lunt resuming his starting role or Walsh carrying the load a little while longer, the Pokes should be in good shape against a rebuilding Jayhawk squad.
