OSU's Darrell Williams Freed After Receiving Suspended Sentence

OKLAHOMA CITY -

Oklahoma State University basketball player Darrell Williams is free Friday after a judge sentences him to a suspended sentence.

The judge gave Williams two, one-year sentences that were to run concurrently and ordered the sentences be suspended. He also is required to register as a sex offender.

Williams received his sentence Friday morning in Payne County District Court. The 23-year-old was convicted in July on one count of rape by instrumentation and one count of battery.

During the hearing on Friday, the judge also denied a request for a new trial. Williams' attorneys requested a new trial, claiming they have new evidence. They have not commented on what the new evidence is, and subpoenas for mental health and counseling records of his accusers have been sealed.

However, Williams' attorney plans to appeal that decision and says she hopes a new trial will be granted so he can be found not guilty and clear his name.

Williams was charged after two women accused him of groping them and reaching inside their pants without their consent at a party in December 2010.

Williams was suspended from the OSU basketball team in February 2011. Coach Travis Ford testified that he believes Williams is not guilty.
