After a blowout win in the Cotton Bowl over Texas a week ago, and an even bigger game with Notre Dame looming on the horizon, it's easy to understand why many expected some sort of a letdown game from the Oklahoma Sooners against Kansas Saturday night.

The Sooners suffered nothing of the sort, blasting Kansas 52-7 on homecoming night in Norman.

Landry Jones was a very efficient 20-for-29 for 300 yards and three touchdowns to three different receivers to pace the Sooners offense. The Sooners only ran for 93 yards for the game, but ran for 5.2 yards per carry, and averaged 7.8 yards per play.

Kansas dominated the time of possession, holding the ball for more than 40 minutes, but the Sooners didn't need the ball very long to score. OU had five scoring drives of less than three minutes, and got two special teams touchdowns to blow the game open.

The Sooners jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead in the first quarter lead on a Michael Hunnicutt 37-yard field goal and a beautiful 44-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Kenny Stills. The Sooners had an opportunity to score a touchdown on their opening possession, but Trey Millard dropped a sure touchdown pass from Jones.

Kansas had an opportunity to cut into the lead early when Justin Brown muffed a punt, giving the Jayhawks the ball at the OU 11-yard line. However, on third down, Tom Wort sacked quarterback Dayne Crist, who fumbled the football. Defensive tackle Casey Walker picked up the loose ball and rumbled 45 yards to the Kansas 28. The Sooners later scored on a Blake Bell rushing touchdown, making the score 17-0.

Brown redeemed himself for the earlier muffed punt, taking the very next Kansas punt 90 yards for a touchdown, and the rout was on. The Sooners tacked on a Damien Williams rushing touchdown and a Sterling Shepard 9-yard touchdown reception to go into the locker room up 38-0.

The second half started much the same way the first half ended, with Roy Finch taking the second half kickoff 99 yards for yet another OU touchdown. It's the first time OU has had a kickoff and a punt return for a touchdown in the same game.

Millard also atoned for his drop on the Sooners' first drive, holding on to a 25-yard pass from Jones that put the Sooners up 52-0. The starters began exiting about halfway through the third quarter, with Jones coming out just before the end of the quarter.

Kansas managed to avoid the shutout by scoring a touchdown with 3:11 left in the fourth quarter after a 19-play, 80-yard drive that took over 10 minutes of time off the clock.

The Sooners can now turn their attention completely to Notre Dame, who defeated BYU 17-14 Saturday afternoon. OU head coach Bob Stoops compared the anticipation for the matchup to that of the 2000 game against then No. 1 Nebraska. The Sooners won that game, 31-14, en route to the 2000 national championship.

OU fans will be looking for a similar result next Saturday night.
