OKC Animal Rescue Group Helps Reunite Injured Dog With Family

It's a happy ending to a not-so-happy tale.

An Oklahoma City pup was injured after being hit by a car. His owners couldn't afford to treat his injuries and made a difficult decision to euthanize him. However, an Oklahoma City animal rescue group stepped up to help cover the cost of the treatment and reunite him with his family.

According to the Bella Foundation in Oklahoma City, on Saturday, October 13, 9-month-old Luke escaped through the front door of his owners' home after seeing another dog in their yard. Before his owners could catch him, Luke was struck by a car in the neighborhood.

Luke's owners rushed him to a veterinary clinic due to severe laceration to his hind legs.

The owners could not afford to treat Luke's injuries.They could only take Luke home with bandages on his legs at that time.

On Saturday, October 20, the family made a decision to humanely euthanize Luke at a local shelter. Little did they know that the dog's angels are not so far away.

Cailin Phillips and Stephanie Scheiern with Safe Haven Animal Rescue were at the shelter while Luke was brought in. The two contacted the Bella Foundation and asked for help.

Officials with the Bella Foundation then contacted Animal Emergency Center of Oklahoma City, one of the organization's partner veterinarian clinics, and arranged treatment for Luke through the their Low Income Assistance Program.

The Bella Foundation gave us the following statement:

"We are very happy to reunite this family. The Bella Foundation's primary mission is to assist pet owners when they need it and this is a perfect example of that mission. Luke's family did not ask for help but we knew giving it was the right the thing to do. There are already too many animals in shelters from people who do not want them but Luke's family did and now he gets to go home."

Now, officials with the organization say the pup is currently receiving treatment for his injuries. They were able to get in touch with Luke's original owners, and he will reunite with his family in just a few days.

In addition to covering the cost to treat Luke's injuries, the foundation also will pay to have him neutered.
