Council Representing OK Boy Scouts Speaks Out About Preventing Child Abuse

Posted: Updated:
OKLAHOMA CITY -

News 9 is learning more about the alleged sexual misconduct involving former leaders with the Boy Scouts of America. We now know several former Oklahoma-based leaders were named in the confidential files released last week.

The Last Frontier Council based in Oklahoma City declined to comment specifically about the alleged misconduct. However, they are speaking out about what they're doing to protect kids now and to prevent child abuse.

The council representing boy scouts in more than 20 Oklahoma counties maintains that keeping kids safe is the top priority. This is in the wake of the so-called "perversion files" released last week by order of the Oregon Supreme Court.

The files support claims that alleged sex abuse was covered up from 1959 to 1985 across the U.S. to protect Boy Scout leaders.

Now everyone in the organization is required to undergo protective training on how to spot abuse.

They also encourage young scouts to watch for abuse and report it.

The national organization released the following statement:

"While it is difficult to understand or explain individuals' actions from many decades ago, today, Scouting is a leader among youth serving organizations in preventing child abuse."
