OKLAHOMA CITY -

A popular cell phone application used to enhance personal photos is getting criticism from some of its users.

Oklahomans using Instagram tell News 9 there is an increasing amount of porn-laced spam and nude photos showing up on their personal and private accounts.

"Some have been nudity or a lot of exposure of the body," Kerwin Moore of Norman said.

Smartphone owners are now using Instagram more than Twitter, and the social media site is rapidly growing in popularity among young adults and teenagers.

According to PCMAG.COM, Instagram -- now owned by Facebook -- had an average of 7.3 million smartphone users accessing its service every day in August. That's more than mobile users accessing Twitter during the same period.

Jennifer Kragh of Oklahoma City is the mom of an 11 year old who uses Instagram, and she's furious at the filth that has been filtered through her daughter's private account.

"I monitor her account daily and I noticed one day there was a web link posted on a comment someone left on one of her photos. I clicked on that link and that's when pornography came up, " Kragh said.

Kragh took her concerns to Instagram, but she says the company was more worried about the age of her daughter rather than deleting the porn.

"I would just ask that they help protect their users," said Kragh. "I'm doing my part as a parent in monitoring the content and trying to teach her to be responsible, but I think they can take some accountability as well."

Images on Instagram are often tagged with searchable keywords that send the user to hundreds of related images, and mixed in with those photos are people who like to show skin.

"There's a little bit of vanity to some of the things people are doing. People love to take pictures of themselves in the mirror and put those up," Patrick Allmond of Focus Consulting said.

Experts say parents need to treat Instagram just like Facebook, Twitter or any other social media site on the web. Monitor your child's account and let them know what's appropriate and what should raise a red flag.

News 9 attempted to contact Instagram about the pornography issue, but no one responded to our request.
