OHP: DUI To Blame For Wrong-Way Crash That Injured Four In Seminole County

Four people were sent to the hospital following a wrong-way collision in Seminole County Friday night. Authorities say drunk driving is to blame.

Four people were sent to the hospital following a wrong-way collision in Seminole County Friday night. Authorities say drunk driving is to blame.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, troopers responded to the crash at 6:36 p.m. Friday on County Road EW 129, just west of State Highway 59 in Seminole County.

A 2004 Honda Accord driven by 32-year-old Brandon Hurst of Midwest City was eastbound on County Road EW 129, traveling left of center, when it struck a 1977 Ford pickup head on, according to the OHP collision report.

The pickup driven by 49-year-old Phillip Welch was going westbound on County Road EW 129 and had just come over a hill when it was hit by Hurst's vehicle.

Hurst, Welch, and a passenger in Welch's pickup, 57-year-old Willea Harjo, were transported to the hospital in stable condition.

A second passenger in Welch's pickup, 66-year-old Phyllis Kueneman of Maud, Oklahoma, was transported by Life Flight to the OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City with head, trunk internal and external, arm, and leg injuries. She is listed in critical condition.

Hurst's condition at the time of the collision is listed as "drinking, ability impaired" in the OHP collision report. Welch's condition is listed as "apparently normal."

Troopers have determined the cause of the collision to be "alcohol- DUI/DWI."

Hurst was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. However, Welch and the two passengers in his vehicle were not wearing seat belts.
