No. 23 Cowgirls Rout Cal Poly In Season Opener

The Cowgirl basketball team routed Cal Poly 90-59 in the season opener for both schools in Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Oklahoma State's women's basketball team had six players score in double figures as the 23rd-ranked Cowgirls rolled to a 90-59 victory against Cal Poly on Friday night in Gallagher-Iba Arena.

In the season opener for both squads, OSU got a balanced scoring attack with all five starters scoring in double digits. The Cowgirls shot 48 percent from the floor while holding the Mustangs to 35 percent.

Senior Toni Young led the way with a team-high 20 points to go with 10 rebounds for her 22nd career double-double. With her effort, the Del City native moved into a tie for fifth place on the school's all-time double-double list with Shaunte' Smith.

Defensively, OSU forced 31 Cal Poly turnovers en route to a 35-6 advantage in points off turnovers.

Cal Poly stayed within striking distance for most of the first half before OSU used a 16-3 spurt over the final five minutes of the half to build a 48-28 margin heading into the halftime break.

In the second half, Cal Poly never got closer than 19 as OSU finished off its seventh-straight win in home openers.

Sophomore Liz Donohoe scored 16 points and added a game-high six assists, while freshman Brittney Martin scored 15 points and had a game-high six steals in her Cowgirl debut. Sophomore Tiffany Bias scored 12 points, while senior Lindsey Keller added 10.

Junior Kendra Suttles came off the bench to hit five of her six shot attempts and add 10 points of her own.

Molly Schlemer led Cal Poly with 21 points and 12 rebounds.

The Cowgirls will return to action on Nov. 13 when they travel to Springfield, Mo., to take on Missouri State at 7 p.m.
