Tuesday Morning Update

Posted: Updated:

After yesterday's clouds and colder air, today will feature sunny and cool conditions with highs in the upper 40s near 50.  Light northerly surface winds around 5 mph will be likely as a surface ridge of high pressure builds across the northeast portion of the state.  The surface ridge will slide quickly eastward allowing for a return of southerly winds Wednesday and Thursday as the next in a series of upper level troughs grows closer to the state.

The cold front finally cleared southeastern OK yesterday afternoon bringing colder air to the entire state, but temps across northern OK remained on the cold side for most of the day.  The low stratus deck kept out highs near or below 50 for most locations and the gusty north winds created wind chills in the upper 30s to lower 40s.  We're expecting highs today near 50 after morning lows in the mid-20s.  Temps will be warming by the end of the week with readings this weekend featuring morning lows closer to our average highs for early December.  Saturday and Sunday afternoon highs should reach the lower 70s.

As the next minor trough advances closer to our area, low level moisture will attempt to surge northward across Texas and possibly southern OK Thursday and Friday.  I will make a slight "on air" mention for a few brief showers or sprinkles during this time period for the southern portions of the state, but our chances across NE OK and SE Kansas will remain near or below 10% pops.

The upper air pattern will become favorable for several days of southern surface winds by late this week into the early portion of next week.  This will hopefully increase the low level dew point field and get us ready for some showers or storms by early next week.  GFS and EURO data both support a storm system nearing the area Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.  We'll watch the data and make adjustments as the time period approaches. Another benefit from the upper air pattern will result in warmer readings for the southern and central plains by this weekend into early next week.

Yesterday's high in Tulsa was 48 recorded at 4:29pm.

Our normal daily average high is 55 and the low is 35.

Daily records include a high of 77 from 1927 and a low of 16 recorded on this date in 1938.
