This year, they're handing out 2,500 scarves and hats to more than 1,200 kids at high-need schools.

There's no charge. The volunteers say they're paid in smiles from grateful children.

"It's something. It really is. It is a blessing to us that we can make people happy," said volunteer Joyce Gensler.

The Knittin' Kittens will be giving away more hats and scarves to students at Springdale Elementary Tuesday and to the kids at Celia Clinton Elementary on Thursday.

The group also shares their crafts with cancer patients and nursing home residents.
