BROKEN ARROW, Oklahoma -

The City of Broken Arrow is asking its water customers to conserve water for the next 48 hours as a precautionary measure because of ongoing construction at the city's new water treatment plant.

Officials say the city's ability to pump water to the storage tanks will be limited for 12 hours beginning Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning due to construction at the new plant.

"During construction of our new state-of-the-art water treatment facility, there are certain planned aspects and elements where the contractor will have to make a critical connection to the existing waterline system at the plant," said Director of Engineering Kenny Schwab. "Although we do not anticipate significant issues with our water supply, we are requesting that our residents voluntarily restrict their water usage and conserve water until Wednesday evening just as a precaution."

The $57 million membrane treatment facility will replace the existing Broken Arrow plant constructed in 1966 and is scheduled for completion in July 2014.

The completed facility will be able to process up to 20 million-gallons a day during the winter and up to 28 million-gallons in the summer.

Officials say once the crucial construction is completed, water customers will be notified that they can resume normal water usage.
