Green Country Prepares For Winter Weather On Christmas Eve

Business boomed this Christmas Eve, at the malls as well as the grocery stores, where people stocked up for Christmas dinner and perhaps a day or two after that, in case the weather hinders travel.

The winter weather forecasted for Christmas Day is expected to impact travel, starting possibly as early as 3 a.m. for some parts of Oklahoma.

Every government agency that works on the roads is expecting a busy Christmas morning.

On the eve of the season's first snowstorm, the quiet spots were the equipment yards, where road crews park their trucks and where they store the salt.

Much of the city of Tulsa's supply is left over from the mild winter last year.

ODOT and the Turnpike Authority say they're ready to go. They'll all start work as soon as the weather changes Christmas morning.

Everyone else is getting their equipment ready, too. Any place with a snow shovel or sled or ice melt was on the list for last minute shopping.

"Today, the first thing I sold was a snow shovel, right off the bat, the guy was getting ready. And then it's been like that ever since then, steady, with people buying those supplies," said Richard Womach of Best Hardware.

That's why John Bury and his two children were at Best Hardware, so they would have what they need when it snows.

"We bought a sled for the kids and a brush and scraper and we'll see if it actually snows," Bury said.

The really busy spots, besides the malls, were the grocery stores, where people were buying what they need for Christmas dinner and what food they might need if travel is a problem for a day or two.

The lines were long at Reasors and just about everywhere else.

Donna Ellis was preparing for a big family dinner and said she'd tackle the snowstorm later.

The combination of the holiday and the forecast snow increased the crowds as shoppers got ready.
