Drivers are revving up for a chance at the Golden Driller in Tulsa's 28th Annual Speedway Motors Shootout, which starts this weekend.

"It's good family entertainment," said promoter Emmett Hahn.

The high-speed sport is full of rich history and tradition.

"My dad raced and I asked him if I could race and he said if you like it, then you can do it," said racer Brendon Wiseley.

Wiseley is a fifth generation micro sprint racer. At 11 years old, he's already won a number of races. This year, he's looking to add the Tulsa Shootout to that list.

"It's fun to win and it's fun to race and I want to get a Golden Driller," Wiseley said.

But this journey hasn't been an easy one for Wiseley. When he was 7, he was involved in a life-changing accident.

"My brother and I were riding on a lawnmower. He turned real sharp and I was leaning and I fell off and it cut my right leg off," Wiseley said.

"Brendon, in particular, has been an inspiration to everybody out here. For a kid to go through what he went through and continue to race like he does has been phenomenal," said former racer Bob Chandler.

The Shootout at Expo Square attracts thousands from all over the country who come to watch.

This year, there's also more than 1,000 entries for the race, which is something that hasn't been done in more than a decade.

"We got them here from 7-years-old to 60-years-old driving these cars and it's good racing," Hahn said.

It's so good that returning champ and California native Dahne Lynn McKay is back to claim another title.

"I won this race last year and it was pretty exciting. Everyone was pretty happy and to be the first girl to ever win and make history, that's pretty big," McKay said.

McKay also comes from a family of racers, many of whom are competing this weekend.

But she's the first girl in her family to take control of the wheel.

"I just want to say, girls, don't let anybody tell you what to do. Just come out and race. It's pretty fun," McKay said.

The action continues all weekend.
