Tulsa Women Fall To SFA Despite Mayberry's Career Day

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -

Taleya Mayberry set a new career high with 33 points, but it wasn't enough as Tulsa dropped a 73-69 decision to Stephen F. Austin on Sunday afternoon. TU fell to 4-8 on the season, while SFA moved to 5-6 overall.

"It just goes back to the fact that we didn't play hard enough in the first 20 minutes," Tulsa head coach Matilda Mossman said. "We have to be a 40-minute team. I am so proud of the way we played that second 20 minutes, we did everything better than they did and there is no reason we couldn't have been that good in the first 20 minutes. We are just going to go back and keep motivating and keep having expectations to be better."

Mayberry led the field with 33 points, while Kelsee Grovey added 10 points and Tiffani Couisnard and Loren McDaniel each scored eight. McDaniel pulled down a team-best 15 rebounds and had two blocks, while Couisnard added 10 boards and three steals.

TU shot 36-percent from the field, but was just 2-of-12 from three-point range.

Tulsa had a 49-41 lead in rebounds and an 11-9 advantage in steals, while SFA had an 8-3 lead in blocks.

SFA led for nearly the entire first half and climbed to an 11-point advantage to go into the locker room up 37-26. Mayberry had 11 points, while Couisnard who got into early foul trouble, added four.

The Hurricane scored the first 11-straight points to tie the contest at 37-all with 17:07 on the clock, but the Jacks countered with a 5-0 run and inched ahead to a seven-point advantage at 48-41. TU once again tied the game with a seven-point run, 48-48, but SFA outscored Tulsa, 12-5, for a 60-53 advantage with 7:06 on the clock.

The Jacks were led by four players in double figures, including Daylyn Harris with 17 points, Porsha Roberts with 15, Antionette Carter with 11 and Kali Jerrell with 10. Carter, Roberts and Annette Davis each pulled down eight boards.

Tulsa will return to action on Thursday, January 3rd against Langston. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
