Hundreds of people in Tulsa started 2013 by diving into icy waters, in nothing but their swimming suits.

For some, it proved to be too much. EMSA said they transported five people to the hospital to be treated for hypothermia and treated a handful of other people at the event.

But the rest of the annual Tatur Polar Bear Plunge went off without a hitch.

Competitors ran a two mile course, jumping into swimming pools along the way. If they made it to the last pool, they could dive to the bottom for a medal.

Racers say it's a refreshing way to start the new year.

"You know, I just enjoyed it with my friend, Tim Fischer, and the kids took a lot of pictures of us and we just had a great time," said competitor Brandon Perkins. "So, I wouldn't say our time was very good, but we had a great time."

Everyone got free pizza and beer to warm up after the race.
