Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy has announced that defensive coordinator Bill Young will not return next season. OSU linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer will be elevated to defensive coordinator.

"We are appreciative of everything Coach Young has done for us over the past four years," Gundy said, "but we are also excited about heading in a new direction with our defense."

Spencer just completed his fifth season at OSU. He is a 1987 Georgia Tech graduate and came to OSU after spending the 2004-2006 seasons at Duke, where he served as assistant head coach, recruiting coordinator and secondary coach.

Young's departure was first reported Wednesday night by Pete Roussel of CoachingSearch.com, who reported Young had been dismissed and Glenn Spencer, co-defensive coordinator and linebacker coach, would be promoted into his position.

It's unclear what could have prompted the possible change in the staff.

The 44-year coaching veteran led an inconsistent defense this season that gave up 51 and 41 points and 618 and 615 yards, respectively in back-to-back losses at OU and Baylor.

His health has also been a concern recently. He missed the first two games of the 2012 season to have an aneurysm removed between his eyes.
