A Bixby pastor surprised some thieves when he opened up his church Sunday morning. Pastor Shannon Watterson said the criminals even used church tools and playground equipment to try to haul off their take, but ran away instead when he came in the front door.

"I pulled up to the church and noticed the TV in our foyer was gone," Watterson said of his arrival at Quest Church, 12 West Dawes in downtown Bixby.

"I walked to the sanctuary and saw one of the kids' play wagons loaded up with TVs and stuff."

The pastor said he started to go further into the church but thought it might be wiser not to confront the thieves. Instead he called Bixby Police who arrived "in about a minute," he said.

The would-be burglars apparently heard Watterson enter the church and took off out the back door before police arrived.

"They were on foot, so they had to be from around here," Watterson said. "They used our tools to break the stuff down. They had nothing, so it had to be impulse."

The pastor said Bixby Police told him it was probably a crime of opportunity by drug users who see a chance to finance their habits.

"There are a lot of people in this area that aren't doing so well," Watterson said. "That's who we're trying to minister to."

Watterson said he was surprised someone would choose a Sunday morning to break into a church. They plan to quickly invest in a security system.

"We're still having church this morning," he said.
