Police say a Tulsa woman left a child behind at Walmart as she tried to avoid being caught for shoplifting. Jaqueline Marie Washington, 51, is in Tulsa County Jail on complaints of caretaker abuse/neglect and petit larceny.

A loss prevention employee called police to the Broken Arrow Walmart, 2301 West Kenosha Street. The employee said he saw Washington take several packs of socks and some other items and hide them underneath a black coat in her shopping cart.

The coat was lying in the bottom of the cart, and a sleeping child was also in the cart basket.

Washington walked past the registers and left the store without paying for the items, according to an arrest report. When the employee approached her outside, Washington grabbed her purse from the car and walked away, leaving the child and the grocery cart in the store entryway.

Broken Arrow police stopped Washington on the corner of Kenosha Street and Aspen Avenue, identifying her by her white T-shirt and leopard-print pajama pants. She gave them permission to search her belongings, the arresting officer said, and they found several packs of socks in her purse and in the sleeves of the coat.

Officers contacted the child's mother, who told them her aunt Jacqueline was supposed to be taking care of the child while she worked.

The stolen merchandise was valued at $125.26, according to police. Washington is being held on a $30,500 bond.
