One person died in a house fire at West Newton Street and North Tacoma Avenue Monday night.

Crews from the Tulsa Fire Department started fighting the fire around 6:30 p.m. TFD said some of the crews came straight from another fire.

When they arrived, the majority of the home was involved in flames and heavy smoke. Firefighters said the fire was concentrated mainly in the front of the house.

They attempted to enter the home from the back to search for residents, but the flames and smoke forced them back out to fight the fire from the exterior, TFD said.

When the flames were knocked down enough to re-enter, firefighters found one person inside. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene, after attempts to revive the person failed.

Tulsa Fire said they were still notifying the next of kin.

Firefighters had to return to the home early Tuesday when the fire rekindled.  That fire destroyed the rest of the home.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but firefighters say it appears a resident of the home was just trying to stay warm.

Tulsa Fire urged residents, as temperatures dip to keep combustible materials away from their heating units and to be cautious with fireplaces and space heaters.

"Just want  to emphasize the importance of making sure your home heating appliances are in good working order and making sure all combustibles are moved back from your heating appliances those appliances are working overtime right now because of the extreme cold temperatures," said Tulsa Fire District Chief Jeremy Moore.
