My Granny Visited News 9

Like many other professions, this job often requires us to work the holidays. With the snowstorm on Christmas, I spent the day with my work family, instead of my actual kin. I had the chance to catch up with my granny this week, and we had a fabulous time! She is a lifelong Oklahoman, and a feisty 80-year-old! Granny has played a crucial role in my life, and has always been my biggest fan!

Since I had her here in the metro with me, I decided to bring her up to the station. I wanted to let her see how the whole news thing looks from behind the scenes. We rolled into the station at about 11:45 AM, about the time everyone is preparing for the noon newscast. We walked into the studio and I introduced her to Meteorologists, Matt Mahler and Michael Armstrong. Granny watches both of them and was delighted to meet them in person. Funny thing was, we walked around the corner and there stood Michael applying his makeup. I am used to seeing this and thought nothing of it. The guys don't like to do it, but it's a must for TV. Granny had an odd look on her face, and I quickly explained what he was doing and why. She then looked at Mike and said, "So do you wear mascara too?" I of course busted out laughing…it was a legitimate question. Mike let her know that he ONLY wears the necessary powder, no mascara or blush!

Granny also got to meet one of her favorite anchors, Lauren Nelson. She went on and on and on about how Lauren is even prettier in person then she is on TV. Like most people who see a television station for the first time, Granny was shocked at how the studio is set up. We sat down and watched the first block of the newscast so she could see the teleprompter, the camera movements, and the green screen. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed getting to show her a window into my world!

Next we had a day filled with manicures, cookies, coffee, and catching up.
