Moderating Trend Next Few Days.

Posted: Updated:

After another very cold start this morning, as you can see from the first map on the right, temperatures are finally starting to moderate and that trend will continue into the early part of the weekend. In fact, we should be close to normal for daytime highs today and tomorrow and above normal for Friday and Saturday. Not only will our daytime highs be trending upward, so will our overnight lows. The normal diurnal temperature range at this time of year is 27/48 for the low/high respectively.

Look for daytime highs to be well into the 40s this afternoon along with lots of sun and a SW surface wind. Despite a more N to NW wind on Thursday, daytime highs will be well into the 40s once again. The more northerly wind component is just a wind shift with no significant change in the air mass. It is also a reflection of a stronger system aloft moving across Texas, but that system will stay far enough south that we will be dry.

After that, southerly winds for Friday and Saturday should push our daytime highs well into the 50s along with lots of sunshine. Another cold front will arrive Saturday night, but this system will only bring us back down to near normal for temperatures. A re-enforcing surge of colder air will then arrive on Monday with daytime highs expected to be in the 30s. However, this looks to be a glancing blow with the coldest of that air more east of us and we should have a rather quick rebound by the middle of next week.

Unfortunately, as the QPF map on the right shows, our prospects for any significant moisture anytime soon are pretty much in the slim to none category. Although cold fronts continue to come our way periodically as would be expected in January, they have not done much to alleviate the ongoing drought situation. That pattern is likely to persist through the end of the month the way things are going right now.

In the meantime, stay tuned and check back for updates.
