TULSA, Oklahoma -

A Southwest Airlines flight diverted to Tulsa International Airport with apparent mechanical problems Monday morning. Flight 254, with 72 passengers aboard, landed safely, according to airport public information officer Alexis Higgins.

The smell of smoke in the cabin of the Boeing 737 alerted crew members to a possible problem, according to the airline spokesperson Olga Romero.

The alert came out at about 9:15 a.m. when the plane was 30 miles out from Tulsa. Higgins said the plane was on its way from Kansas City to Houston.

Romero says the airplane was inspected in Tulsa and that the passengers were placed on a flight to Dallas where they will be able to board a connecting flight to Houston.
