Oklahoma State Senator Proposing Legalizing Medical Marijuana

An Oklahoma lawmaker is proposing a bill that would legalize medical marijuana in our state. State Senator Constance Johnson, District 48, says this move could bring money to state and help reduce crime, but it's a controversial measure.

Eighteen states and the District of Columbia already allow doctor approved marijuana to treat medical conditions.

Now, Democratic Senator Johnson wants Oklahoma to follow suit.

There are actually two bills she's proposing. First, she wants to make marijuana legal for people with certain medical conditions with permission from their physicians.

Proponents of the measure say it would not only bring money into our state, but it would free police up to pursue violent criminals, reduce prison overcrowding and take money out of drug lords' pockets.

Senator Johnson is also proposing a bill to reduce the penalty for one and a half ounces of pot possession or less, to a maximum of 10 days in jail and $200 fine.

This year, nine other states are expected to consider similar bills.
