Some of Tulsa's own were honored Wednesday for doing outstanding work.

The Tulsa Rotary Club honored a firefighter and two police officers for their commitment to our community.

Officers Mark Sherwood and Jesse Guardiola are partners who took it upon themselves to start doing community outreach in the Spanish speaking community.

They also created a program where Spanish speaking volunteers ride with officers to translate and help officers work on their Spanish speaking skills.

"When we would actually go out and try to build relationships with people, they were surprised, they were shocked," said Sherwood. "You could see their eyes light up that 'You mean the police really care, they're out here to serve us, to protect us.' To see that barrier come down in their life and see a relationship built. We built great friendships in the community. That's been the best thing about it all."

The Rotary also honored Mark Meyer, a firefighter who, while fighting his own battle with cancer, created Hydrants of Hope.

That program sells lapel pins to raise money to help children in the Tulsa are who are also fighting cancer.
