Tulsa High School Sweethearts Reunited By News On 6 Story

A Tulsa couple celebrated this Valentine's Day, by re-telling the story of how they met. It involves a tow truck and a news report, and it's why they call me their Cupid.

Ron Shanks and Linda Fitzgerald believe that, in each other, they have rediscovered the love of their lives.

But they wouldn't have each other, if not for a traffic jam outside the very first event in the BOK Center.

It was 2008, and a sold out motivational seminar created a parking shortage.

"Came out of there very motivated and couldn't find my car," Linda said.

She couldn't find her car, because it had been towed away. The bill was $157.

She wasn't happy, and she told me all about it.

"This was totally, totally, totally out of control," she said.

One of our viewers that day was Ron Shanks. He recognized something in Linda that seemed familiar.

"I heard the voice and saw the name on there and I thought that couldn't be the same girl I knew years ago," he said.

Ron and Linda had known each other in high school.

They went to each other's senior prom, in 1964.

"Went to two different high school proms, Central and Webster, and we got out of school, went our separate ways for a lot of years," Ron said.

They lost track while he was in the service, and she was in college. Both married, but were single again when Linda parked in the wrong spot and ended up on TV.

"But you're our Cupid," Linda said. "If it wasn't for you and that report, we probably never would have gotten together."

They met again, then dated again and got married last year.

He likes to listen, she likes to talk, but when he talks, he can make a few words count.

"She's still the most interesting woman, human being, I've been around ever in my life. And she totally has 110% of my heart," Ron said.

Now, they're looking forward to the rest of their lives together and thankful for a chance reminder of a love from long ago.

The couple became high school sweethearts after they met the first time in the checkout lane of Safeway in west Tulsa's Crystal City neighborhood. Ron said he liked her shy smile and her mother liked the way he double bagged her groceries.
