No. 1 OU Softball Dominates Pair Of Ranked Opponents In California

No. 1 Oklahoma scored two 5-0 victories over No. 16 Georgia and No. 19 Arizona, running its total score against ranked teams to 41-0.

No. 1 Oklahoma continued its dominant start to the 2013 season, shutting out both No. 16 Georgia and No. 19 Arizona, 5-0, at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif.

With the pair of victories, the Sooners moved to 6-0 against ranked teams this season, winning those games by a combined score of 41-0.

Against Georgia, OU starting pitcher Keilani Ricketts limited the Bulldogs to a single hit, striking out 10 batters during the game.

Jessica Shults was the star for the Sooners offensively, knocking an RBI single in the first inning and a two-RBI single in the second inning. Georgia Casey also had an RBI single in the second inning.

Destinee Martinez drove in the Sooners' final run in the fifth inning, an RBI single that scored Shelby Pendley.

In the second game against Arizona, Michelle Gascoigne struck out 12 batters and the Sooners hit three home runs in the fifth inning for the win over the Wildcats.

Shults hit the first home run of the fifth inning, a solo shot to right center. It was the 57th of her career, breaking the Oklahoma and Big 12 Conference career home run record.

Ricketts followed with a solo home run of her own, her third of the year. Later in the frame, sophomore Jessica Vest hit a two-run home run, the first homer of her career.

The Sooners continue play at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Friday, taking on UC Santa Barbara and Nebraska.
