The No. 14 Oklahoma baseball team improved to 7-0 to open the 2013 season thanks to a 3-1 triumph over Iowa in the first game of the 2013 Kleberg Bank College Classic Friday at Whataburger Field.

Junior Dillon Overton tossed eight shutout frames, fanning nine for the Sooners (7-0) to stymie the Iowa (1-3) bats. He improved to 3-0 on the season and sports an 0.56 ERA with 16 strikeouts against just one walk.

Redshirt sophomore righty Robert Tasin worked the ninth inning and picked up his second career save, striking out one.

Senior infielder Jack Mayfield led the way at the plate with three hits while senior outfielder/infielder Max White drove in two runs. Junior infielder Matt Oberste extended his hitting streak to 10 straight games dating back to the 2012 season.

Overton and Iowa sophomore southpaw Sasha Kuebel were locked in a scoreless pitcher's duel until the sixth when OU's offense broke through. Freshman outfielder Craig Aikin sent a one-out single into center, then moved to third on a base hit to right by Mayfield and scored by way of an RBI groundout by White.

The Sooners added another insurance tally in the eighth as Mayfield cracked a two-out single to right, stole second and then scored on a base knock back up the middle by White.

Oklahoma plated its third and final run in the top of the ninth. Senior infielder Garrett Carey was hit by a pitch and later scored courtesy of an infield single by freshman catcher Anthony Hermelyn.

Iowa got a run back in the home half of the ninth and had the winning run at the plate with two outs, but Tasin shut the door by striking out redshirt sophomore infielder Jake Mangler.

Oklahoma battles tournament host Texas A&M Corpus Christi Saturday at Whataburger Field. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. CT.
