College Softball: Sooners Win, Cowboys Fall, Hurricane Dominates

Oklahoma State

The Oklahoma State softball team lost 5-1 to No. 13 UCLA Saturday afternoon at the Mary Nutter Classic.

The Cowgirls (7-6) fell behind 2-0 in the first inning and never recovered. OSU cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the second but that was as close as they would get. The Bruins (11-1) sealed the victory with a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Senior Amy Graham led OSU at the plate. Graham went 1-for-3 including an RBI double. OSU starter Kat Espinosa (2-3) took the complete-game loss. Espinosa went six innings, allowing five runs on eight hits and striking out two.

Late Friday night, OSU defeated No. 17 Stanford, 4-1. Espinosa highlighted the upset victory with a dominate performance for Oklahoma State. She went seven innings, allowing one run on four hits, no walks and striking out six. Erika Campbell was 2-for-3 on the night with an RBI.

The Cowgirls will conclude play at the 2013 Mary Nutter Classic when they take on Long Beach State at 9:30 p.m. late Saturday night.

Oklahoma

No. 1 Oklahoma finished its time at the at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. on Saturday with a 6-0 win over No. 23 Florida State.

With the win, Oklahoma improved to 15-0 this season and 7-0 against ranked teams. OU is outscoring top-25 teams 47-0 this year.

Keilani Ricketts picked up another win for the Sooners, allowing just a single hit in the complete game shutout while striking out 11 batters.

Shelby Pendley went 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored to lead the offense.

Destinee Martinez got the scoring started for the Sooners in the second inning, doubling home Pendley before coming around to score herself on a throwing error by left fielder Kirstin Austin.

The Sooners added two more runs in the third inning and a single run in the fourth and fifth innings.

Oklahoma finally returns to Norman to open its home schedule March 1 against Nebraska as part of the Spring Preview Tournament. The tournament will feature Houston as well as OU and Nebraska. First pitch for the Sooners and Nebraska is set for 6 p.m.

Tulsa

The Golden Hurricane continued its impressive start to the season with a pair of wins at the Texas Invitaional.

The Hurricane defeated Lamar, 11-3 in five innings, and Utah State, 3-0.

Against Lamar, Tulsa erupted for four runs in the opening frame and added four more in the third after Lamar had drawn within a single run after two innings. The Hurricane put the game away with three more runs in the fourth inning.

In the second game against Utah State, Lacey Middlebrooks pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out 10 batters.
