Friday Morning Update

Posted: Updated:

We'll start with cold air and finish with cold air today.  Highs will only top out in the lower 40s for most of northern OK with some upper 30s likely to persist along the Oklahoma and Kansas state line vicinity.  Temperatures across southern OK will rise to the mid or upper 40s.  North winds in the 10 to 20 mph range will be common.  A short wave in the mid levels of the atmosphere will move near the state today and could produce a few flurries at times, but it's almost impossible to pin point exactly where and when this may happen.  Short term RAP data supports the chance across a few areas, including far southwestern OK and also near the northern third of the state by midday.  This chance will remain extremely low and I will not place any pops on the map at this point.

The cold air will remain through Saturday with tomorrow mornings low temperatures in the upper 20s and lower 30s.  Highs tomorrow may move into the mid 40s with mostly sunny conditions after the morning hours.

The main upper air pattern will undergo a shift this weekend.  The eastern trough will finally get a shove and move more to the east.  The western ridge will begin to increase heights.  Another disturbance will quickly move out of the Pacific Northwest and into the middle part of the nation Monday.  Our surface winds Sunday will back from the southeast in the 10 to 20 mph and surface temperatures will move to near normal with highs in the upper 50s.

Monday we have a shot of seeing 60 around the noon to 1pm hour before the surface low and cold front sweeps over the state bringing northwest winds and cooler air Monday night.  Any precipitation with the Monday system will be extremely short lived and positioned across extreme eastern OK or western Arkansas.  I will not include any pops on the map for this forecast cycle.

Temperatures behind the system will drop to slightly below normal.

The next storm may approach the state by next weekend with thunderstorm chances.  Welcome to March.

The high in Tulsa yesterday was 47 recorded at 2:18pm.

The normal daily average is now 58 and the low is 36.

Records include a high of 93 from 2006 and a low of 9 from 1962.

You'll find me on face book and twitter.

I'll be discussing the weather this morning with Dan Potter on The KRMG Morning News.

I'll also be forecasting state wide weather today on the Radio Oklahoma Network.
