Oklahoma

The No. 10 University of Oklahoma baseball team captured the weekend series over Pepperdine courtesy of a 5-1 victory in the rubber match Sunday at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Sooners improved to 11-1 through three weeks of play in 2013.

OU pounded out 10 hits as a team for the eighth time this season—including a season-high three home runs—to beat the Waves. Senior infielder Jack Mayfield launched his second round tripper of the year while senior outfielder/infielder Max White and senior infielder Garrett Carey each left the yard for the first time in 2013. Mayfield went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while Carey finished 2-for-4. Freshman outfielder Craig Aikin went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, his fourth straight multi-hit game. Junior infielder Matt Oberste cracked his fourth double of the season and has now hit safely in 15 consecutive games dating back to the 2012 season.

Redshirt freshman southpaw starting pitcher Adam Choplick fanned three over 5.1 innings of work and improved to 2-0 on the season. Junior lefty Billy Waltrip came out of the bullpen and twirled 3.2 scoreless frames, striking out seven.

The Sooners head south of the Red River to take on UT Arlington Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.

Oklahoma State

Oklahoma State had its seven-game winning streak snapped Sunday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium as UC Davis rallied for two runs in the ninth inning to earn a 4-3 win.

The loss was the first at home for the Cowboys this season as they fell to 9-2 overall, while UC Davis improved to 6-6.

"It was a disappointing loss, especially when you're given a few breaks late and have a chance to maybe sneak in there and grab a game where you didn't play well but are still in position to win," said OSU head coach Josh Holliday. "But we made too many mistakes today, and against a good team like UC Davis, if you give them extra opportunities or breakdown on fundamental plays to keep them in the game, they've got a chance to get back and get you. That's definitely what happened today."

The score was tied 1-1 through much of the contest. The Aggies plated a run in the top of the first on an RBI groundout by Paul Politi, and OSU evened the score in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Tanner Krietemeier, the first of his career.

That would be all the scoring until the eighth, when UC Davis took advantage of a Cowboy fielding error and scored the go-ahead run.

But trailing 2-1, OSU answered in the bottom of the inning. Robbie Rea led off the frame with a home run to left-center field to tie the score again, and the Cowboys then took advantage of some poor defense from UC Davis to take the lead.

With two outs, Zach Fish singled and Victor Romero walked, which brought pinch hitter Saulyer Saxon to the plate. Saxon sent a grounder to second base, where it was booted by Steven Patterson to give the Cowboys a bases loaded situation.

Up next, Gage Green grounded to second, and Patterson was unable to field the ball cleanly. The second-straight error by the Aggies' second baseman allowed Romero to score and gave the Cowboys a 3-2 advantage.

However, in the ninth, OSU closer Randy McCurry could not collect the save. Mike Mazzara greeted McCurry with a single, and Austin Logan followed with a double. Patterson then redeemed himself with an RBI groundout to tie the score at 3-3.

McCurry got the next hitter to pop out, but with two outs, Spencer Brann delivered a clutch double down the right field line to bring home what proved to be the winning run.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Cowboys put the tying run on first base twice but failed to score.

Randy McCurry took the loss to fall to 1-1 on the season, while Max Cordy worked 1.1 scoreless innings for his second win.

The Cowboys managed just six hits in the contest, two of those by Krietemeier.

OSU starter Tyler Nurdin worked six strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits, and he struck out eight, the most by a Cowboy pitcher this season.

Oral Roberts

The Oral Roberts baseball team split a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Southeast Missouri State, losing game two on a suicide squeeze, 6-5, after winning game one, 4-3.

Senior Nate Goro reached base four times, all on hits, and scored twice. Chris Williams also added three hits in the doubleheader, including a double in game two.

ORU moves its record to 5-5 on the season. They take the field again on Tuesday as they travel to Wichita State.

Game 2

Controversy became the story of the bottom of the sixth inning in the second contest. With the bases loaded full of Redhawks, Andy Lennington pulled the pitch down the left field line. The home plate umpired ruled that the ball bounced over the third base bag, making it a fair ball, clearing the bases.

Lennington advanced to third on the throw home from the Golden Eagle outfield. Dalton Hewitt stepped in and drove Lennington with a sacrifice fly to left field for the go-ahead run.

The Golden Eagles retook the lead in the top of the eighth inning as the Redhawks walked Williams, Healy and Goro. Denny Clement entered the game to run for Clement, scoring with Healy just behind him on a two-run single up the middle by Domenico.

Lennington struck again in the bottom of the ninth, placing the ball in the right-center field gap. Hewitt stepped in and laid down a bunt to move Lennington over, but an throwing error by the ORU pitcher allowed Linnington to come across to tie the game.

Clayton Evans entered as a pinch hitter following Hewitt, reaching on a bunt single. The bases were eventually loaded as Josh Meade drew an intentional walk with no outs.

Brad Fisher who entered the game to begin the ninth struck out Tyler Boxwell for the first out of the inning.

Unfortuantly, Branden Boggetto caught the Golden Eagles off guard, laying down a suicide squeeze to push in Hewitt from third.

Game 1

After the first inning of the afternoon, the Golden Eagles found themselves looking up at the Redhawks in the run column. On the second pitch from Gavin Glanz, Jason Blum got a hold of a pitch and sent it over the left-center field wall for a solo homerun.

Glanz (1-1) eventually earned the victory in the game, going six innings and striking out five. Phillip Wilson pitched a perfect seventh inning, before giving way to Alec Smith (1) who picked up a two-inning save.

In the top of the third inning, the Golden Eagles plated three runs to take the lead. Brandon Healy led the inning off with a double down the right field line, moving over to third on a groundout before scoring on a single past the shortstop from Graham McIntyre.

With two outs, and Matt Brandy standing on first following a walk, Saturday afternoon's hero Tyler Boss doubled to left center to clear the bases, giving the Golden Eagles the lead, 3-1.

In the Golden Eagle half of the fourth inning, ORU added an insurance run as Domenico lined out to deep center with the bases loaded, allowing Nate Goro to score from third.

The final two Redhawk runs came in the bottom of the fourth and in the final half inning.

In the second half of the fourth, the Redhawks plated a run with the help of back-to-back doubles to begin the inning. Cole Bieser got the Redhawk half of the fourth going with a double down the left field line, scoring quickly as Derek Gibson sent the first pitch to the wall in left center.
