West Texas A&M Sweeps Northwestern

Canyon, TX -

No. 3 ranked West Texas A&M University swept Tuesday's doubleheader against Northwestern Oklahoma State, 13-1 and 6-3.

"In both games it was one or two plays that hurt us," Northwestern coach Cody Hooper said. "We played a quality team today and you have to make the most of your opportunities and we didn't. Little things like being aggressive on a double play and fielding the ball correctly would have gone a long way."

In the first game of the twinbill the Lady Buffs (16-1, 0-0 Lone Star Conference) started off the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of RBI singles by Renee Erwin and Jessica Sipe for the early 2-0 lead. WT added to its lead in the bottom of the second with an RBI double by Mallory Wyatt followed by back-to-back RBI triples by Erwin and Jessica Sipe for a 5-0 lead. Lacey Taylor extended the lead to 6-0 with a sacrifice fly.

The Lady Buffs added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning on an Erwin grand slam to left field to make it 10-0. The Rangers answered in the top of the fourth inning with a Monique Zevada solo homerun to left field to cut the WT lead to 10-1.

However, WT pushed across three runs in the fourth inning and the game was called after five innings.

Kellie Mason was tagged with the loss. In three innings of duty she gave up 10 runs (nine earned), nine hits and three walks, while striking out five.

In game two the Rangers started off the scoring in the top of the second inning as they capitalized on a pair of Lady Buff errors to push two runs across for the early 2-0 lead. Northwestern added to its lead in the top of the third inning on a Zevada solo homerun to center field for the 3-0 lead.

The Lady Buffs cut into the Ranger lead in the bottom of the third inning with a RBI double down the right field line by Erwin to make the score 3-1 in favor of Northwestern.

WT took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with five runs and took a 6-3 lead and closed out the game in seven innings.

Allora Miller was credited with the loss. In six innings of duty the junior allowed nine hits, six runs and two walks while striking out four.

Northwestern (4-4, 3-1 Great American Conference) returns to the field for a pair of doubleheaders this weekend against Southern Nazarene University.
