Child Porn Victims' Lawyer Calls McLoud Teacher's Letter Offensive

A lawyer for the victims exploited by Kimberly Crain and Gary Doby had some harsh words as he read over a letter sent to a judge by the former McLoud elementary school teacher.

George Wright said the letter was "offensive" to the victims and their families. He said Crain never took responsibility for the crimes she committed against the third grade girls in her class.

"If this was supposed to be an apology, it's inadequate. I don't, I don't think it's an apology. I think it's an attempt to mitigate her own criminal penalties," said George Wright, who represents the families. "She seems not to take and responsibility for any of her actions, which has sort of been a constant theme in this matter."

In the letter written by Crain ahead of her March 22 sentencing, Crain described the crimes she committed, including two at her home and at least once in her classroom.

"Once we arrived at my house the girls washed some shoe polish off my truck windows. So I could dry their clothes, they changed into a tank top and underwear," Crain wrote. "They did this one at a time in a spare bedroom where I placed a video camera in a box full of old non-working camera equipment and set it on a table next to the bed. The video camera was turned on an left to run while each girl went into the room to change."

"Maybe the most difficult part for the victims here is she can so lucidly describe the events but at the end of that can't make the connection to her own culpability and that makes closure more difficult I think," explained Wright.

Crain blamed a multitude of personal problems that forced her to commit the crimes. She said those medical problems, including menopause, weight gain and depression, affected her mental stability at the time of the crimes.

So went on to write that the children were somehow spared any harm because they "were unaware of the things going on" and that "no traumatic effects would have taken place."

Wright said that was flat out wrong.

"I can tell you from personal experience with these parents and these children that they are indeed damaged by this and they will be probably for a long time," he said. "It doesn't go away. It's something that is not just a singular event but it something that a child and a parent as well are going to have to reprocess and deal with every time there's something that reminds them of something like this."

Gary Doby previously pleaded guilty to the crimes and was sentenced to life in prison. Kimberly Crain asked the judge to consider probation in her letter, which the victims' lawyers do not see as harsh enough.

"I think that probation is certainly not appropriate. I think that given what's happened I don't know that anyone except for maybe her thinks that probation is appropriate."
