Southeastern Stumbles In Opener At ASU

Posted: Updated:
San Angelo, TX -

Southeastern's offense continued to produce on Tuesday, but for the first time this season it was the pitching staff that struggled as No. 14 Angelo State handed the Savage Storm an 18-8 loss on Tuesday night in San Angelo, Texas.

The loss drops SE to 11-9 on the season heading into a double-header on Wednesday afternoon slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch.

On the offensive side, Travis Caraway and Nick Grimmett each turned in a pair of hits, with Grimmett driving in three runs, including a two-run homer, while Trevor Bowen drove in a pair of runs.

The Storm posted nine hits in the contest, with five players picking up a hit in addition to the two who posted multi-hit outings.

Tucker Alexander added the one remaining RBI.

Southeastern got off to a rough start out of the gate on the hill, with Evan Rice getting the start but lasting just 2.0 innings while allowing seven runs, five earned, on six hits with one strikeout.

Corey George then came on in relief and faced four batters but was touched up for four runs on four hits in that span.

Canyon Conley then entered and posted numbers similar to Rice's, allowing seven runs, five earned, on six hits with two strikeouts in 2.0 innings of work.

Storm Griffin came on to finish the contest and tossed two hitless innings with three strikeouts to finish out the contest.

SE fell in a big hole after allowing two runs in the first, three more in the second and a nine-spot in the third to fall behind 14-0 before finally getting on the board in the top of the fourth.

Alexander opened that inning with a walk and Caraway followed with his second single.

Alexander would come around to score after two wild pitches and Caraway would come home on a Grimmett single.

ASU would then add four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to push its lead to 18-2.

In the fifth the Storm took advantage of back-to-back one-out walks to Alexander and a pinch-hitting Robby Nunez.

Alexander would later come home on a Bowen sac fly, while Nunez would score on a passed ball.

Mark Frank would reach base in the sixth on a hit-by-pitch and later score when Alexander reached on a fielder's choice, cutting the gap to 18-5.

The Storm then opened the seventh inning with a walk by Chevis Springer, followed by an RBI double by Bowen and a two-run homer to left by Grimmett to close to 18-8, but SE could not pick up another run to extend the game beyond the seventh inning.
