$1.25 Million Budget Shortfall Prompts Layoffs At City Of McAlester

Seven City of McAlester employees are looking for new jobs, after workers from several different departments were laid off Wednesday.

The city manager said the cuts were necessary because of a $1.25 million budget shortfall.

Senator Tom Coburn recently praised McAlester on Capitol Hill for how the city is cleaning up its finances.

City leaders had hoped to avoid layoffs.

At this point, no furloughs are planned.
