OKLAHOMA CITY -

Police have arrested an Oklahoma City man accused of attacking a man with an axe, then trying to choke one of the police officers who was taking him into custody.

Around 7:15 p.m. on March 18, police were called to a home in the 3200 block of N.E. 12th Street. Witnesses said 53-year-old Vernon George Mukes swung an axe at a man, cutting his forearm.

Two officers went to the house and saw Mukes sitting on the porch. Mukes immediately walked inside, shut the screen door and refused to come out. He told officers, “If you all come in here, I’m gonna sic my dogs on you.” The police report states Mukes had two very large pit bulls with him.

Officers say Mukes then slammed shut his front door. Police forced open the screen door then began kicking in the front door. It took several attempts because Mukes was using his weight to keep the door shut.

When police finally forced open the door, one officer immediately pulled Mukes outside and then tried to close the door again to keep the dogs inside the house.

While one officer was focused on the door, Mukes and the other officer began to struggle. According to the police report, Mukes wrapped his hands around the officer’s neck and began to choke him. The officer managed to cry out for help, and his partner tackled Mukes.

All three men fell off the porch and into a flower bed. One officer was able to tase Mukes; that’s when the suspect began to comply and officers put him in restraints.

While police were transporting Mukes to the Oklahoma County jail, he allegedly stated that he’d attacked the other man with an axe because the victim claimed Mukes’ wife had performed sexual favors for him.

The victim was treated at OU Medical Center for a laceration to his arm.

Mukes was booked into jail on complaints of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, aggravated assault and battery on a police officer, and resisting arrest. Mukes also has several previous felony convictions for larceny, burglary and bail jumping.
