The Federal Aviation Administration announced Friday, March 22, 2013 which control towers across the U.S. it will be shutting down as a result of the sequester cuts that went into effect on March 1st.

Earlier this month, the Federal Aviation Administration released a list of low or moderate volume control towers staffed by FAA contractors.

Friday, the FAA said airport towers in Lawton, Norman, Wiley Post in Oklahoma City and Stillwater will close beginning next month.

The FAA says 24 federal contract towers previously proposed for closure, including the Enid tower will remain open "because doing so would have a negative impact on the national interest."

“We heard from communities across the country about the importance of their towers and these were very tough decisions,” said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “Unfortunately we are faced with a series of difficult choices that we have to make to reach the required cuts under sequestration.”

The FAA says it will begin a four-week phased closure of the 149 towers beginning on April 7.
