Two teenage boys continued to fight for their lives Saturday after being thrown from an SUV while they were "car surfing" with friends.

The 15-year-old driver told Edmond Police that he was driving about 40mph when he swerved sending Luke Smith and another teenager flying off the SUV and onto the ground. Both boys suffered serious injuries and were rushed to OU Medical Center in critical condition.

Smith's parents, Phillip and Shelley, told News 9's Chris McKinnon that their son was lucky to even be alive.

"He's heavily sedated right now and on a ventilator," explained Shelley Smith. "The injury that we're most concerned about is his head injury and he had surgery on that last night to remove part of his skull to relieve some of that pressure."

Car surfing has become an Internet sensation with many posts of people trying to hold on to the outside of a moving car. That was what the group of friends were doing Friday evening.

The other teenage involved suffered severe head injuries, according to Edmond Police. People who live in the area where the accident happened said that boy was not responsive when they ran over to help.

"I saw one of the kids laying on the concrete and a neighbor trying to hold him down. So I rushed over there and he was bleeding real bad and unconscious," recalled Landon Segress. "It didn't look good. He was unconscious, bleeding real bad and I know they were trying to get him to come to and the ambulance came."

Police say this isn't the first time they've seen kids doing this, but stress it is extremely dangerous and should not be attempted. They hope that after this horrific accident, others will wake up and realize car surfing can be deadly. The Smiths agree.

"Of course our prayers would be that he'd wake up and be Luke," said Phillip Smith. "This is absolutely a life and death situation. We're here because if there's one parent who will have that conversation with their child and that'll keep this from happening. It will have been worth it."

Edmond Police said the driver could face charges, but added those charges depend on whether the teenagers make it.
