Good To Be Young: OSU Takes Down DePaul

DURHAM, North Carolina -

Toni Young appeared to be on a mission in Oklahoma State's first-round matchup against DePaul.

The Cowgirls' senior was an unstoppable force in the first half of seventh-seeded OSU's 73-56 victory against the Blue Demons in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Young scored 20 of her game-high 25 points in the opening half, including hitting nine of her first 10 shots, to help the Cowgirls open up a 42-32 halftime advantage.

The DePaul defense centered on stopping Young in the second half and that's when the rest of the Cowgirls took over, but not without a brief scare. OSU nearly blew a 16-point lead, allowing the Blue Demons to tie the game at 45-all with 13:54 remaining.

The Cowgirls responded with a 13-0 run and OSU held DePaul scoreless for a span of 9 minutes and 45 seconds to help secure the opening round victory. The Blue Demons missed 15-consecutive shots in that span.

Liz Donohoe added 14 points for the Cowgirls (22-10), while Tiffany Bias and Brittany Martin added 12 and 11 points, respectively. Young also had 13 rebounds and three blocks to go with her 25 points on 12-of-17 shooting.

Anna Martin led DePaul (21-12) with 12 points and Brittany Hrynko scored 11 but connected on an abysmal 2-of-17 shots. OSU held the Blue Demons to just 25 percent shooting for the game and 21.6 percent from 3-point range.

Oklahoma State shot 46 percent to earn its first tournament victory in three years, sending the Cowgirls to Tuesday night's second round to face No. 2 seed and host Duke in Durham, N.C.

OSU won the WNIT in its first year under Jim Littell last season, who took over following the deaths of coach Kurt Budke and assistant Miranda Serna. Littell has the Cowgirls back in the NCAAs for the first time since reaching the second round in 2010.
