An Oklahoma City police officer broke his leg while trying to apprehend a suspect at an apartment complex on the northwest side of the city.

At 3 a.m. Wednesday, police responded to a domestic disturbance call at Willow Cliff Apartments just east of N.W. 50th Street and MacArthur. Officers could not find the suspect and left, but received more calls about two hours later.

Officer Jeff Coffey found the suspect, who appeared to be trying to avoid police. Coffey took the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Tommy Chasenah, into custody and handcuffed him. As Officer Coffey was taking Chasenah to his patrol car, the suspect began to struggle. Police say Chasenah lunged at Coffey, knocking him to the ground. Chasenah fell on the officer and broke Coffey's leg. A Warr Acres police officer rushed to help and they managed to gain control of Chasenah.

Coffey was taken to the hospital to receive treatment for his broken leg. The five-year veteran of the police force is expected to fully recover.

Chasenah was booked into the Oklahoma County jail on complaints of aggravated assault and battery on a police officer, and public intoxication. He was also wanted on a warrant out of Cotton County.
