OKLAHOMA CITY -

It seems like everyone is sneezing, sniffling and drying their eyes. Without a doubt allergy season has begun.

Pollen from plants and trees and grass gets into our bodies and causes those annoying symptoms. And doctors say it's best to take care of allergies now before they cause other medical problems.

Juliette Dalhed is one of thousands of Oklahomans suffering from severe allergies...seeking out treatment to curb some of her symptoms.

"In Oklahoma, we really don't have a total break," Dalhed said.

Doctor Atkinson, with the Oklahoma Allergy and Asthma Clinic, says if you know you get allergies, start treatment before you get symptoms.

"Take antihistamines and if you've got nasal steroid sprays, start those beforehand, because that does really make a difference. What happens with many people is that inflammation or the swelling that occurs in the nasal passage. Once it gets there, it's a lot harder to treat once it's there," Atkinson said.

Atkinson says it's smart to get treatment for allergies before things get worse.

"About 40 percent of people with allergies will develop asthma. The other thing that you see a lot of in people with allergies is chronic sinus disease," said Atkinson.

Dalhed already suffers frequent sinus infections...now doctors are trying to put together a treatment plan for her.

"I just got 64 beautiful pin pricks along my arms to be able to figure out what I'm allergic to. Apparently a lot of things," said Dalhed.

There are also some common sense things you can do to combat allergies; close your windows, treat carpets and furniture and take allergy medicine.
