Tulsa Firefighter Injured Battling Berryhill Structure Fire

Firefighters from Tulsa and Berryhill battled a big fire next to a home in Berryhill Sunday afternoon.

A Tulsa firefighter was also injured fighting the 1 p.m. fire.

What started as a shed fire in a Berryhill neighborhood in the 2400 block of South 57th West Avenue quickly became much more serious as the flames raced toward a home.

"It's just a bad feeling," said homeowner Sam Silkey.

Silkey wasn't home at the time, but returned very quickly.

"They said it was burning pretty bad and they didn't know what else it could get into," said Sam Silkey.

The fire puffed black smoke high into the sky.

Berryhill Fire called in backup from Tulsa Fire and they worked together to contain the fire.

Only a shed and a garage were damaged.

Silkey says he lost lots of merchandise he tries to sell at flea markets.

"I think I lost a truck in it and basically all kinds of stuff back there, but we'll get over all of that," said Sam Silkey.

Silkey also lost construction materials including asphalt, shingles and tar, he stored near the shed.

"A lot of good fuel and with the heat change the last 24 hours, it's hard to say what the cause was," said Berryhill Fire Chief Michael Hall.

Silkey and his neighbors know this fire could have been worse.

"I'm just thankful that it wasn't any worse and all the help that came out to take care of it. If they hadn't, I don't know what would have happened," said Sam Silkey.

The 47-year-old Tulsa firefighter was taken to a hospital. EMSA says he was transported in good condition.
