Laird Leads RedHawks Past Nashville

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, Tennessee -

Oklahoma City got back to its winning ways on Tuesday thanks to an eighth-inning push and a stellar outing from first baseman Brandon Laird to get past Nashville on the road.

The RedHawks (4-2) opened up the scoring early when Laird doubled on a line drive to center field to score Robbie Grossman and Trevor Crowe for a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first inning.

OKC built on that lead in the second when Crowe hit a ground-ball single to score Che-Hsuan Lin for a 3-0 lead.

But the Sounds wouldn't go away quietly.

Nashville's Caleb Gindl connected on a solo home run in the third inning to cut into the lead. The Sounds scored again in the bottom of the sixth when Cole Garner reached first on a throwing error by OKC's Jimmy Paredes, allowing Stephen Parker to score and close the gap to 3-2.

Nashville's comeback was completed in the seventh inning when Blake Davis singled to left field, driving in Gindl for a 3-3 tie.

The momentum had clearly swung but Laird came back to deliver the win for Oklahoma City.

After being held hitless since the third inning, the RedHawks began the eighth with five straight hits to regain the lead. Laird broke the tie with his second RBI double of the night, and Jake Elmore immediately followed with an RBI single to make it 5-3 in favor of Oklahoma City.

Ross Seaton made his first start on the mound for the RedHawks and allowed one run and six hits in five innings of work. Relief pitcher Jordan Lyles picked up the win after allowing two runs and five hits in 3.2 innnings.

The two teams continue the four-game series on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. in Nashville.
