My 2 Cents: Controversy Over MSNBC Anchor's Promo On Children

Posted: Updated:

A promo featuring an MSNBC anchor has ignited a controversy.

It shows Melissa Harris-Perry talking about why she believes America hasn't invested enough in public education:

"Because we've always had kind of a private notion of children. Your kid is yours, and totally your responsibility. We haven't had a very collective notion of these are our children. Part of it is we have to break through our private idea that kids belong to their parents, or that kids belong to their families. And recognize that kids belong to the whole communities. Once it's everybody's responsibility and not just the households, then we start making better investments."

Initially I wrote it off as clumsily stated, but then remembered this is a recorded, approved promo and she's saying we have to break through this idea that kids belong to their parents or families.

They do belong to their parents and families. Perhaps she was trying to make the point that the community as a whole needs to take care of kids who aren't being cared for by their parents, but of course we already do that.

It sounds like she's saying more than that, that the community as a whole, not just the parents need to set the guidelines, standards and morals for how our children are raised.
