RedHawks Comeback Attempt Comes One Run Short

Posted: Updated:

There's an old saying that says you can't have a great comeback unless you get really far behind.  The Oklahoma City RedHawks tested that theory Saturday night, but came up just short in a wild comeback attempt, falling to the Memphis Redbirds 8-7.

Things weren't looking good for the RedHawks right off the bat.  Already leading 4-1, Memphis' Justin Christian hit a third-inning grand slam to put the Redbirds up by a comfortable 8-1 score.

Brandon Laird's second homer of the season helped OKC add two in the fourth as they cut the Memphis lead to 8-3.  Then Jason Jaramillo's RBI-single in the bottom of the seventh brought the RedHawks within 8-4, but the real damage was yet to come.

Jimmy Paredes' RBI-double scored Trevor Crowe and got the rally started in the bottom of the eighth.  The next man up was Mark Krauss, and he belted one over the center field wall to score Paredes and bring OKC back within one run at 8-7.

But Memphis' Victor Marte nailed the door shut on the ninth and closed out the RedHawks' hopes of a come-from-behind victory.

Michael Wacha (1-0) pitched five innings to earn the win for Memphis, while the lost went to Jose Cisnero (0-1) who allowed eight runs and didn't even make it out of the third inning.

The RedHawks (5-4) close out the series with Memphis Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
