Jack Story, a Tulsan prominent in the development of the Port of Catoosa, died Friday following an illness, according to the Arkansas River Historical Society.

He was 88.

From his hospital bed last week, Story still showed concern about the waterway, Port Director Bob Portiss said Monday.

"Jack held my hand and asked me, because of the recent drought, whether we had enough water in the navigation system to float barges," Portiss said.

"I told him, 'We do, Jack, thanks to you.'"

Story was active in organizations that promoted the development of the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River navigation system in the 1970s.

"Jack Story was essential in convincing the citizens of the City of Tulsa and Rogers County to develop a 2,000-acre inland Port at the head of navigation for the navigation system," Portiss said. Voters passed a $21.2 million general obligation bond in 1967.

Story was recognized as an "Oklahoma Water Pioneer" by the Oklahoma Water Board and is a member of the Arkansas River Hall of Fame.
