Over 24,000 Runners Take Part In 2013 OKC Memorial Marathon

Over 24,000 runners from all over the world participated in the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon Sunday morning, to remember those who lost their lives in the Murrah Federal Building bombing 18 years ago.

The runners crossed the starting line at 6:30 a.m. at the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum. They passed around the Capitol, and through some historic neighborhoods, and on to Nichols Hills. Nearing the 20th mile, runners will head to Classen, and then it's back to the finish line at 12th and Broadway.

The Memorial 5K started at 6:45 a.m., while the Kids' Marathon started at 8:15 a.m.

According to EMSA, 27 people at the marathon called for medical assistance from emergency medical crews at the scene. Four patients were transported to local hospitals by EMSA. One man, who is in his 30's , was transported in serious condition to a local hospital.

The other three patients were transported in good condition.

Fourteen patients were treated by emergency medical crews at the medical tent. The remaining nine people did not require care, EMSA officials said.

In light of recent bombings that happened at the Boston Marathon, more Oklahoma City police officers are on the patrol. It's the most officers they've ever had at the event.

Three people were killed and over 200 people were injured after two explosions went off near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15.

Law enforcement agencies from around the state and even the nation came to help patrol the OKC Memorial Marathon route.

A majority of runners wore t-shirts and red socks during the marathon to show support for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.

"We decided [to wear the t-shirts and the red socks] as a tribute to Boston, to everything that happened to them. Oklahoma City obviously knows what the tragedy seems like, so it's the least we could do to show our support," Oklahoma runner Patrick said.
