OKLAHOMA CITY -

The death of a 7-year-old boy who'd been left home alone has been ruled a homicide after police found evidence the house was burglarized before the fire that claimed the boy's life started.

A neighbor in the 2500 block of S.W. 51st Street near Villa called 911 just before midnight Sunday after seeing smoke coming from a home. Firefighters arrived quickly, searched the house and found the boy in a back bedroom.

The child, identified as 7-year-old Adrian Ruberto Avalos, suffered burns and smoke inhalation. He was rushed to a hospital, where he died.

Firefighters say no one else was in the home at the time of the fire. Adrian's mother and her boyfriend arrived at the house round 2 a.m. It's not known where they were when the fire broke out. They're now being questioned by investigators.

According to Oklahoma City Police Sgt. Gary Knight, the boy's death has now been ruled a homicide because police found evidence of a burglary. Apparently, a door at the home was kicked in.

The boy's father arrived at the scene around 6 a.m., and he was extremely upset. He said he learned about his son's death while watching the news Monday morning.

Adrian's 2-year-old brother was with his grandfather at the time of the fire.
